I’m impressed, and it makes perfect sense. Good food is made at home.

He recently told PopEater that cooking is one of the things he and his partner, the beautiful Camila Alves love to do. In his words, “Cooking is one of the main things we do. One and a half hours to two hours a day. We eat out like once every two months because we cook. It’s really great family time from six to eight. Glass of wine and we start mixing up sauces and trying new things. See what we can pull off and we swap, sometimes I’m the cook, sometimes Camila is the cook.”

The pair, who have two children, son Levi, two, and 14-month-old daughter Vida – rarely go out together because they have so much fun trying out new recipes.

They enjoy getting into the kitchen and mixing things up. McConaughey said, “We’ve got a whole bunch of things to fill up a cookbook right now. We might as well put it all in a cookbook.”

My sentiments exactly!

What else does the “Lincoln Lawyer” enjoy? When he isn’t in the kitchen, 41-year-old Matthew loves going for a drive as he claims being behind the wheel of his car gives him time to relax and think.

McConaughey said: “When I’m driving, that’s my favorite place to think. Or not think. “I like to put myself in a place where the answers sort of show up and my favorite place is behind a wheel, heading somewhere.”

Sounds like the next place he’s heading may be the bookstores for some book signings!

Those are the first words I hear over the phone when a new client calls me…

Usually they have found me online, which is very encouraging, considering all of the old and outdated listings that remain on the internet in any given category search.

I’d like to share my story with you…so you understand how all of this has come about. The journey has been interesting!

Not too long ago I self-published my first cookbook. I was absolutely ecstatic when my books arrived at my home. I used one of the traditional printers – something I would not do again, but we’ll get into that later. The end result was that 30 boxes of books landed on my doorstep, with no instructions about what to do with them next. Yikes!

I didn’t have a website built yet, because to be honest…I didn’t have the money to pay for the books to be printed <em>and</em> get a website built. So there I was… with all my books and no way to sell them.

I did have a plan, because I had written a book proposal, but I had not implemented my plan yet, so I had no place to showcase my beautiful book!

Here’s the truth…No website or blog = NO INTERNET SALES…ouch!

That got me thinking…I wished there would have been a place where I could post my book advertisement that would not cost too much, but would give me some of the exposure I needed to start making some sales. A place where I could advertise while I got a website or blog up and running.

Or…a place that could give an author additional exposure and traffic, even if they I had a website or blog. A space that was “dedicated” to cookbook authors!

I told myself that someday soon, I would create that space, so other cookbook authors would not have to go through what I was going through at the time.

Around about the same time, I also realized there needed to be a system for writing a cookbook. I had done it completely on my own, learning as I went, making mistakes I didn’t have to make, and wasting time I didn’t have to waste. It was tough, but I worked really hard at it and got it done.

I learned a lot from those experiences. Because I had a 16 years of writing experience in the corporate world,  I decided to create and document a fool-proof system that would help other authors write, publish, and market their cookbooks.

The idea is to cut through all the mistakes, use the shortcuts, and incorporate  today’s cutting-edge marketing techniques, including video,  social media and whatever tools become available that will help an author be more successful.

A system that would evolve as the market evolves, always staying current with what’s happening. A system that would ensure that the user would not make the same mistakes I made when I wrote my first cookbook.

So in 2008 I became the Cookbook Coach. I wrote and developed “The 7 Secrets of a Successful Self-Published Cookbook,” my proprietary, easy-to-follow, step-by-step system for getting your cookbook written.

It was a true pleasure for me to coach Joacim. He was excited to be writing his first cookbook an always had a lot of questions. He kept himself open to suggestions, and when I took him through the steps of my system, The 7 Secrets of a Successful Self-Published Cookbook, he implemented  very quickly. He followed my system, and the result is his completed cookbook in under 5 months. Not bad for someone with a full load at school. Joacim’s enthusiasm was infectious, and we had many good conversations over skype about a lot of subjects. We’ve become long distance friends.

Starting to write a cookbook is no different from starting to write any book. That means the best way to start your cookbook project is by asking one simple question: Why? That’s right…why? Consider this—if you were submitting your manuscript for publication through a traditional publisher; you’d be required to submit a detailed proposal.

One of the important components of the proposal includes explanations about why your book should be published and, why anyone would want to read it. This can seem harsh to a newbie, but it’s important to know. When you submit a proposal, you’re actually asking for a chance to “sell” your book idea to the publisher. What they really want to know is if you can tell them why they should bother to read your proposal and your manuscript. So—you have to be really clear on why that is, or you’ll get nowhere fast.

But maybe you’re wondering how this applies to self-publishing. You need to know the “why” for yourself. So you can be sure of your project’s worth from start to finish. If you don’t know why you’re doing it from the beginning, you may wake up one morning wondering why the heck you’re putting yourself through writing a cookbook to begin with. That could cause you to give up when the going gets tough. Further, if you don’t know why you’re writing your cookbook you probably won’t be able to identify your “target market.” And that spells disaster for any cookbook project.

If you want to self-publish a cookbook and you want it to be successful, you owe it to yourself to go through the exercise of writing a book proposal. By doing so, you’ll learn everything you need to know about your cookbook. The book proposal becomes the written business plan for your cookbook. When completed, the book proposal will serve as a compass to guide you through the entire process. You’ll know where you’re going with your cookbook and, you’ll know how to get there. You’ll know everything you need to know about your customer and, you’ll know what you have to do to market your cookbook.

When you become clear on the WHY, you’ll be empowered. This will support the strong inner belief you’ll need to carry you through the duration of your writing project. You’ll also be able to speak about your cookbook confidently and intelligently when you begin marketing. And whether you’re doing that online or face-to-face, communicating effectively will come in very handy. So gather your recipes, do your research, write your stories, and type to your heart’s content, just know why you’re doing it!

Why? A book proposal, when properly written, is the business plan for your book. The book proposal will be the key to your success whether you self-publish your work, or you submit your work to a traditional publisher.

Either way, you need it.
